It hurts.

It hurts so goddamn much to be here.

So why are you here?

Well, first of all, it's about the closest you've got to home. Second, you're looking for someone. Someone important to you. Of course, you don't actually expect to see him here. Not after the war.

---

"HEY!!! Sweden! Who's she?"
"Hm? Oh, that is (name). She will be staying with us for the next few years."
"Seriously, another girl? I have to live with two girls?!"
"Sealand and (name of best friend) are friends. It's high time you had one, too."
"Yeah, well, why do I have to get a stupid-looking one?"
At this point, (name) began to cry. Sweden wrapped his arms around her protectively and glared at Ladonia with a look that said "go away". Snorting, Ladonia turned and stomped off to play Pokémon.

---

Your first impression of Ladonia, back when you were about eight or nine — an annoying, bratty boy that liked to make you cry. For the next few weeks, you stuck by either Sweden or Finland's side and avoided the boy as much as possible. You were aware that they were nations and you weren't, but that didn't bug you.

Of course, there was that one night that you couldn't find your daddy Sweden or your mommy... er, other daddy Finland.

---

"Pappa? Äiti?" (name) stumbled forward, blindly groping for a figure in the darkness. Upon making contact with something warm and at least somewhat human-like (or rather, nation-like), she clung onto it and cried.
...
Wait.
It was about her size. As she looked closer, she saw the face of the mean boy.
"AAAAAH!!! I just want my pappa and my äiti!"
"Relax, they're just out on a business trip or something. I think."
(name) pulled away, still clutching his sleeve and sniffling. It was the first time she truly looked at him. The scar on his face was gone, amd she realized it was actually a paint streak. His red hair looked dark in the dim light of the moon filtering through a window, but his clear blue eyes shone with a mix of snarky humor and something else. Pity, perhaps?
"... By the way, I never got your name."
"I'm Ladonia, and don't forget that! You're (first letter of first name)... um..."
"I'm (name). Now don't forget that!" She mocked him and giggled. He sighed.
"Well, we should sleep now. Bye." With that, he turned away and sauntered off to who-knows-where.

---

Your very first memory of Ladonia being nice. The first of many. He was a bit too proud for some to handle, but you always liked that about him — the pride was mostly a mask of his hidden kindness. **

In the midst of your thinking, you suddenly find yourself backdown in a pile of rubble and realize how sore you are. Your heart hurts too much to bear, and you never noticed all the cuts and bruises from the wandering the ruins of Sweden-Finland's home until now.

---

A scream rang out. A scream distinctly like (name)'s. No. No. No. Pausing his game, Ladonia jumped up and ran toward the general area where the shrill voice came from, tipping his chair over in the process. If she was hurt, it would be all his fault...
He found the sobbing 10–year-old on the ground and facing skyward. Her ankle appeared to be stuck in several vines, and she had probably tripped while running.
Her wails had faded to a soft whimpering in the presence of the red-haired boy. He patted her head gently. "It's okay, it's just a vine. I'll get you out."
He felt all his pockets for a knife and realized he'd left it behind. Wow, he was stupid. Sighing, he decided to tug at the vines instead. There were a few thorns that pricked his fingers, but he ignored the stinging and eventually pulled them apart.
(name) just stared in wonder at how much perserverance he had.
Glaring, he muttered, "I didn't do it for you, I just had spare time," before marching off.

---

You imagine his face leaning over you worriedly and fail at even remembering his face. The face you adore so much. The face you know so well. The face you haven't seen for a year, and the lingering memories of its owner that haunt you. Like he would be here now to help you up. Who knew whether or not England had let him go, or if he was even still alive?
But being a country, even a micronation, after all, was probably hard work. You remember the time that...

---

"I wanna be a country! Why can't I be one?" (name) burst through the door, steaming with anger. She hated how unfair it was — the countries got to live forever, and she wouldn't.
"Um. (name of best friend) and I have to go!" Sealand grabbed (name of best friend)'s hand and ran outside. (name of best friend) grinned at (name) apologetically.
"Hm. It seems like I have something else, too." Sweden walked out the door (name) had just come from, Finland in his arms.
Ladonia just kind of sat there, playing Pokémon. A twisted look grew on (name)'s face, and she suddenly exploded.
"WHY DOESN'T ANYONE WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS?!?!?!" She ran over to the boy and began shaking him. "LADONIA!!! You want to expand your territory, don't you? I'll become one with you, if it means I can be a country."
"I'm a micronation. GAH! Get away! I almost just —"
"I'LL BECOME ONE WITH A MICRONATION!!! I JUST DON'T WANT TO DIE!"
(name) suddenly found herself pinned against the wall, and noticed the Gameboy on the ground. Ever so slowly, she looked up and (eye color) met light blue.
"(name). Micronations don't live forever. Countries don't, either. Everything living has to die one day."
"LIES!!!" She began to kick and flail her arms.
He tightened his grip on her shoulders. "(name). It
hurts to be a country. It hurts to watch people you love die. It hurts to think that everyone you're close to will, one day, die."
"LIAR!!! I'd still have you, and (name of best friend), and Sealand, and Sweden, and Finland!"
"(name)." His eyes darkened. "I may have only been around since 1996, but believe me — it hurts. It hurts me to think that, one day, everyone I know will be gone. It hurts to know that I'm pretty much just as mortal as a human. And you know what hurts most?"
She shook her head quickly, scared of the look in his eyes.
"It hurts to know that, one day, you'll be old and I'll be young. You'll be dead one day, and I'll still just be a child. It hurts to know that you'll fall in love with someone and marry him and be happy, and it won't be me."

Slowly, he released (name) and walked out the room.

---

It was almost a confession. Being only 13, you were shocked but glad he liked you the same way you kind of liked him. You started being more giggly and blushing more around him, making Sealand and (name of best friend) suspicious. Eventually, Sealand asked out (name of best friend) because he "decided to man up like Ladonia".
The bruises and cuts sting so much, and yet you somehow manage to haul yourself up. Your heart lurches as you remember that Ladonia was mortal. It was a little bit after the near-confession when he changed.

---

"I have decided that I will now be a simple human. I am no longer Ladonia. I am Landon Oxenstierna."
"What?" Everybody looked up in complete surprise. Even (best friend's name) and Sealand stopped talking.
"... I want to grow, and to die."
"You will grow and die one day as a micronation." Sweden, unimpressed, looked back at his newspaper.
"You're not understanding me. I want to grow like a normal human for (name), not live a thousand years longer than her. I want us to look normal together, not as an old woman and her grandson taking a walk together. And I want to be old when she is, and die with her." Sticking out his chin, Ladonia stared on proudly.
Slowly, Sweden set down his newspaper. "Ladonia. Is this truly what you want?"
Ladonia nodded. "Yes. I love (name), and —"
At this moment, he realized (name) had been watching for a while.
"You... love me?" She smiled softly at him. "I thought you wanted to expand your territory, even though I'm just a human.
"N-no, that's not it at all! I just want to because I'm bored, okay?!" He stormed away, face bright red.

---

You smile. He was always so cute when it came to the subject of your complicated relationship. With yet another small lurch in your heart, you remember the day he confessed. It was a clearing in a forest with a small brook. You two had visited it quite often.

---

"(name)? You came?" He looked up in surprise as she neared him.
"Landon? You left me a note?" She mimicked him, giggling. The corners of his mouth lifted slightly, and he moved forward. Within a few strides, he was holding her hands and smiling down at her. He'd grown considerably since he had become a human.
"(name)..."
(name)'s heart began to race. What was happening?
"... Dammit I suck at this." Ladonia sighed, and (name) giggled softly. "Basically, what I want to say is that you're the most beautiful and kind and funny and just I suck at this okay? Will you go out with me?"
"Oh my god." At this point, the (hair color)-haired girl was laughing too hard to get out an answer. Disappointed, Ladonia let her hands go.
"I see... Sorry." A look of hurt was in his eyes. He was clearly forcing a smile and trying not to cry. Light blue eyes suddenly dark, he began to step away when (name) hugged him.
"No no no! That's not what I meant, sorry. My answer is yes, of course! I love you, Landon!"
"Jag älskar dig..." He whispered into her shoulder and hugged her tightly.

---

Your vision blurs. You loved him. You still do. You are hopelessly in love with a micronation-turned-human that is, most likely, currently dead. The war only lasted a year, but it was too much for a 14–year-old like you. You bite your lip and wipe your face on your torn sleeve as you gently rock back and forth on your heels.
The separation was worse.

---

"Sealand, (name of best friemd), Landon, (name). All four of you will stay here. I must go out and find Finland." Sweden frowned as he spoke, not wanting to leave four kids alone.
"It'll be okay. You've done this before, except as dates. The house will be just fine."
"No, that is not what I am concerned about. I fear you will be taken aw —"
The door flew open, and a few soldiers walked in, dragging a body along with them.

Finland.

"Wife!" Sweden ran to him, but someone blocked his way.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, or just England.
The blond nation smirked and pointed at Ladonia. "For Finland, I want him. The child."
"The child is not any land. He is human."
"He
was a micronation, and with just the right amount of coaxing, perhaps Landon will become Ladonia again."
"We want that girl, too-aru. She's cute." China pointed at (name).
"She looks useless and is just a human!"
"Humans have their uses! Besides, more advantage for us-aru!"
"It's a loss if it's just a human!"
"OPIUM!!! Shut up! Our alliance is over-aru! You take the boy, I take the girl. Goodbye-aru." He grabbed (name) without any more argument, and England took Ladonia. Just before parting, Ladonia poked (name).
"(name). Hey, (name). I'll probably never see you again, but I love you. Forever and always." It showed in the lost look in his eyes. His blue, blue eyes (name) had grown to admire. His signature paint streak was there, as always, a habit she couldn't help but adore. She loved him.
"I love you, Ladonia. Forever an —"
Her last words were cut off by the Chinese man. "Yes, young love, blah blah blah. This is war-aru! You will become a soldier for me!"
The rest of the way to China's house was lost in sobs and sleep.

---

Of course, you were never made into a soldier. China pitied you and just made you an honored guest of his house, but refused to let you see Ladonia. He said that Landon had been killed in a battle, because England was just that cruel to everyone. You doubted it, but you kept quiet so China wouldn't throw you out. WWIII ended quickly, though, thankfully.
You breathe in shakily. Here you are, at the stairs. All the damage done makes it look almost unfamiliar. You touch the gnarled wood of the banister as you slowly walk up. They creak slightly from underuse. At the top, you turn around and take in your surroundings. They look like old friends that suddenly aged. It's strange to see them like this, so you decide to head straight to your old room — or rather, former-room-now-just-room — where your prize is. Or at least, should be.

A blanket, given to you by Ladonia.

---

"(name), your favorite color is (favorite color), right?" Ladonia awkwardly shifted from foot to foot.
"Yeah, why?"
"Er... This... It's... It's for you!" He thrust a (favorite color) blanket at (name). There was a Nordic cross on it, pointed out by the thin stitches of a slightly darker (favorite color) — just like Ladonia's flag.
"Thank you!" She beamed at him and hugged him. He blushed and pulled away slightly.
"D-don't expect only nice things to come to you!"
"I won't. I'll expect nice things to only come to me!"

---

It should be here.
You carefully turn the doorknob. You long for your room, and yet you don't want to see the ruins.
Maybe you should just leave. Leave and find another home. You're only 14. It won't be too hard, will it?
But another part tells you to stay and open the door.
You listen to that part.
Three. Two. One.
You push open the door and look around. The familiar smell hits your senses, and you feel nostalgia running through you. All of your stuff lies around everywhere, but no true damage is evident.
Where's Sweden, anyway? And Finland? And what happened to Sealand and (name of best friend)?
You'll probably never know. Nobody would believe you if you said you were friends with multiple countries and in a relationship with a former micronation that may be dead.
You walk further in, and notice a small sound. Sobbing? Curious, you continue and see...
...
Could it be...?
Red hair. Paint streak. Those hands.

---

"(name), World War III is going on."
"I'm aware of that. I'm not quite as stupid as you might think."
"What I mean is... We may get separated or die."
"Well, yes..."
*He sighed. "We should exchange rings. In case if it lasts a long time, I want a promise. A contract."*
"Oh!" (name) beamed and clapped. "I know! We could use a bread t —"
"No. Shhh. I saved this from long before the war. I knew I'd do this one day." He went down on one knee with an expensive-looking ring. "(name). I know we're only 13, but we may never see each other again. Even so, I, Landon Oxenstierna, will love you, forever and always. (full name), will you become one with me?"
"YES!!!" (name)'s eyes suddenly began to leak. No, not just leak. She began to full-out cry and held Ladonia close. "Forever and always!"

---

"LANDON OXENSTIERNA!!!"
The figure sits up abruptly, and your eyes lock.
Ladonia. It really is him. Tears flow forth from your (eye color) orbs as you collapse into a whimpering heap of relief.
"(FULL NAME)!!!"
He runs and nearly ends up dogpiling you in a huge hug-kiss-cry session. When the two of you are finally calm, he grins. "You know, there's this one thing you never said before we were separated."
You hug him, unable to stop smiling. "Really now? I wonder what it was?"
"So do I."
"I love you, forever and always."
"Jag älskar dig, evigt och alltid. I love you, forever and always."
Awedjohsdjfh Ladonia <3
I had two friends test-read it before I decided to submit it here. They say you should prepare some tissues. Anywho, here we go!
I got too lazy and didn't add accents. Just a little bit of Swedish that I hope you're smart enough to figure out from the context. Äiti, by the way, is Finnish for Mother. Which you probably figured out.
Best friend-chan and Reader-chan will be switching places sometime. Yes, you did just read that right. Sea-kun's getting an insert! Just not right now. I'm too tired.
By the way, you should comment. Please. Danke~!

So Sad.... I cried the whole time.
